Incumbent local deputies to the National People's Congress are considering forming a united front to canvass for votes for the next selection, to be held by January.

Cheng Yiu-tong said the coalition would help those who did not have experience.

'For people who have run for elections before, there will not be much difficulty. But for those who have never experienced it, they may need some help,' he said.

Should the group be formed, Mr Cheng said, a list of candidates would be submitted to voters for consideration.

It is understood Peter Wong Man-kong, Kan Fook-yee and Victor Sit Fung-shuen have been keen to group incumbents who want another term.

But Mr Cheng said a consensus had yet to be reached, because most had not finalised their plans.

Fierce competition is expected with more candidates, including leading political parties, indicating an interest in the 36 seats.

At least two Executive Councillors, Tam Yiu-chung and Henry Tang Ying-yen, who are also provisional legislators, have decided not to run.
