Former world number one Jim Courier has moved into the second round of the US$328,000 China Open in Beijing.

Courier, who has clinched 20 singles titles in his career and is the number one seed at this tournament, beat Alex Radulescu of Germany 6-3, 6-4.

He will meet Sweden's Patrik Fredrikson in the second round after the Swede knocked out number four seed Marcos Ondruska of South Africa 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

'I'm very satisfied with my first match in China,' Courier said. 'I hope to win the singles here, but now the most important thing for me is the next round.' Courier, who was world number one in 1992, is playing in his first event since losing to Todd Martin at the US Open.
