Community growth a sign of confidence

Spain

On the occasion of Spain's National Day, I would like to take the opportunity to send my warmest regards to the authorities of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, to the Spanish community and to all Hong Kong residents.

Since my arrival in Hong Kong, I have noticed that the Spanish community has grown significantly and continues to do so.

This is the result of the establishment of a variety of Spanish companies. Not only does this show the vitality of the Spanish economy, but it points to Spain's ever-growing interest in the region and, moreover, in Hong Kong.

Spain is engaged in a number of infrastructure projects. The Spanish company, Entrecanales y Cubiertas, continues working towards the completion of the Tin Kau bridge and is also involved in building a new MTR station in Kowloon.

It is also a pleasure to observe an increased involvement of Spanish banks in the financing of various projects. Spanish companies involved in industries such as leather, footwear, porcelain and wine have enjoyed great success in the numerous international fairs and exhibitions that have taken place in Hong Kong.

There is no doubt Spain's presence has been felt throughout the year, especially in the fields of music and art. But perhaps the most noticeable Spanish influence can be seen on the street with the opening of a wide variety of restaurants, enabling the people of Hong Kong to experience Spain's gastronomy.

Spain has observed with great satisfaction the smooth transition and successful change of sovereignty in Hong Kong. The growth of the Spanish presence in the region shows the confidence my country has in Hong Kong as a stable international centre for trade and finance.
