The Government is investigating a spoof advertisement featuring Tung Chee-hwa.

Oriental Daily News ran the full-page advertisement showing Mr Tung appearing to endorse an alternative 'policy address' which offered gifts to the newspaper's readers.

A Government spokesman said: 'The Government is now looking at the matter.

'Mr Tung has not received any request for his consent.' A further statement might be issued today, the spokesman added.

Oriental Daily News management was not available for comment.

Former Governor Chris Patten was featured in a small number of advertisements during his five years in office.

One advert, for Kit Kat chocolate bars, featured Mr Patten and Chinese official Lu Ping with the slogan: 'Have a break, have a Kit Kat.'
