Sorry about Cenotaph incident

I refer to the letter headlined, 'Action in extremely poor taste', by Peter Johnson (South China Morning Post, September 29).

The animal lanterns mentioned in the letter were used to decorate Statue Square as part of the City Beautification Scheme.

Apparently, the contractor of the project was trying to minimise disruption to pedestrians while removing the lanterns and had therefore placed them on the lawn of the Cenotaph.

I fully share your reader's view that the Cenotaph is a dignified place which commands respect. I deeply regret the incident and apologise for any distress it might have caused to your readers.
