One of the highlights of the World Economic Forum, as far as networkers were concerned, did not take place in the Convention Centre but at a dinner hosted by Asia House at the Mandarin in honour of Philippine President Fidel Ramos.

Asia House is an apolitical private forum for top Asians to interact with one another and with Europe as a whole. Led by its Hong Kong chairman, Victor Chu, it boasts top-notch business leaders as its members.

Mr Ramos made a witty and erudite speech and impressed everyone with his razor-sharp wit - despite the fact that he had had only two hours' sleep in the previous two days.

While guests dined on steamed cod fillet and strawberry bavarois, everyone took a break from discussing business and enjoyed themselves.
