Sony Corporation originated with an electronics shop set up in 1946 in Tokyo, and was officially christened Sony in 1958. Sony gained a reputation for innovation with the launch of the Betamax videocassette recording format and the introduction of the Walkman in 1979. Although its market share has been eroded by products from Samsung Electronics and Apple.
Sony shows digital system for first time
Sony will give the first Asian demonstration of its new multi-channel digital transmission system at next week's Asia Broadcast '97 trade show.
The Japanese electronics giant claims the system is the first end-to-end broadcast system from a single manufacturer which features a full integration of hard disk servers, playback, master switcher control and MPEG2.
The trade show, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from next Tuesday until November 7, is expected to attract 6,000 delegates and 100 companies from 18 countries.
It is being held at the same time as Asia CommuniTech '97, which will address the needs of the growing telecommunications and IT industries.
