Liberal use of evocative term

Why is only Tiananmen Square constantly referred to as a massacre? The Thai Government mowed down demonstrators in 1992, massacring many; Indonesia shot a group of people attending a funeral in Timor, massacring many; even that champion of democracy Boris Yeltsin had tanks open fire on the parliament offices in Moscow, massacring many.

All these things happened in the 1990s, more recent than Tiananmen Square. But we never mention these murderous attacks on unarmed people.

Is it the case that having spent billions on trying to destabilise China over the years since 1947, the West is loathe to admit that its investment has turned out to be fruitless? JOHN RUTTER Kowloon Bay
