Village walls are cropping up in Hunan province - not to keep people out but to keep them better informed.
Every village in Huarong county has had a new wall built to keep residents abreast of events and regional government policy, local cadres say.
Everything from farm taxes to financial statistics are being pasted on the walls, which are being hailed as the way forward in rural government.
Villages are also electing watchdog committees to monitor policy and represent public opinion.
An official, Li Fanqi, said such developments were a sign of greater openness with local government policy on the wall for everyone to see.
He said the walls, along with popularly elected village committees, would ensure democratic management in rural areas.
