Deadline set for complaints over register
Complaints about the provisional electoral register must be lodged by February 21.
Two weeks - February 15 to 28 - have been set aside for hearings to handle appeals.
That would allow about two weeks before the March 15 statutory deadline for publication of the 1998 final register, the minimum time required by the Electoral Registration Ordinance to finalise and publish a final register, provisional legislators were told.
Although the hearing period will be a week shorter than in the past, the Government pledged to extend it to four weeks for elections in subsequent years.
The Home Affairs Department says that 30,000 students and 2,000 working adults have been recruited to boost voter registration.
A number of charity organisations and trade unions had also agreed to help distribute registration forms, said Director of Home Affairs Shelley Lau Lee Lai-kuen.
