Korean Air set to upgrade tracking
Korean Air is planning to launch a cargo tracking system using bar code technology to upgrade its information service to customers.
Ji-young Lee, the airline's vice-president and general manager of the cargo marketing team, said the system would be operational in the second half of this year at the Kimpo cargo terminal in line with the cargo processing system to be installed at the cargo terminal at the new Inchon International Airport.
Korean Air, which presently operates a cargo terminal at Kimpo airport, was planning to complete a new cargo terminal at Inchon International Airport before its 2000 opening.
'Korean Air is developing the next-generation cargo information system that will revolutionise cargo information services by using new information technologies,' Mr Lee said.
Korean Air now uses ACE-II as a cargo information system linked to another system called FAST-IV.
However, the carrier has customised the FAST-IV system and developed various functions to fit Korean Air's needs.
For cargo handling, Korean Air has interfaced with customs authorities for electronic data interchange which enables customs clearance in advance.
The carrier also participates in Traxon, enabling it to communicate shipment information with forwarders all over the world electronically.
This helps the airline to have closer ties with forwarders through streamlined data processing.
