Barry Burton

Wine: Warre Vintage Port Grape: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Roriz, Barroca, Tinto Cao Region: Douro Valley, Portugal Vintage: 1994 The Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful wine-growing areas in the world, with the finest vineyards found in the Alto Douro, about 120 kilometres east of the city of Oporto. Here Warre's has its principal vineyard, Quinta da Cavadinha.

At Cavadinha, Warre's has some of the most modern wine-making equipment in Portugal; its innovative fermentation tanks have been used as models by several other wineries. However, Warre's still makes some of its ports in the traditional manner of treading the grapes by foot in granite tanks called 'lagares'.

Two or three times every decade the wines are judged to be of such outstanding quality they merit consideration as a vintage. (Warre's have only declared 13 times in the past 50 years).

The 1994 is one of the best ever: the wine is classic, firm with subtle tannins, plenty of 'grip' and good fruit. This is a much-sought-after vintage and is hard to obtain. Order now in order not to be disappointed.

Where To Buy: Direct from the importer Kedington Wines (Tel: 2898-9323) at $598 per bottle.
