Support for training study

The Government is to back a proposed study on training needs throughout the financial services industry which will assess whether Hong Kong should set up a Financial Services Institute.

During the launch of the Hong Kong Securities Institute yesterday, Secretary for Financial Services Rafael Hui Si-yan welcomed the new institute but said a new body with a broader brief may also be needed.

He said the study would cover not just securities but the entire financial services industry.

'The launch of the Hong Kong Securities Institute . . . is certainly a first step in the right direction for the industry and will complement the Government's work in the vital area of training,' Mr Hui said.

He said many financial institutions had already agreed to sponsor the study and that the financial secretary would soon appoint a steering committee to oversee the project.

Although tertiary institutions produce many qualified graduates for the financial services sector, there was always a need for specialised training, he said.
