The Government yesterday maintained that contractors are required to submit a list of subcontractors for approval when applying to start demolition work to ensure safety.

However, it allowed the list to be submitted at a later stage for operational reasons after opposition from legislators and industries.

Principal Assistant Secretary for Planning, Environment and Lands Esmond Lee Chung-sin said the Government planned to amend the Building (Demolition Works) (Amendment) Regulation 1997 next Wednesday.

The building law requested contractors to submit the name list together with the demolition plan for scrutiny. But it was criticised as impractical due to the size of the industry and the long waiting time for the approval.
