More than 700 Police Tactical Unit (PTU) officers showed off Operation Santa Claus' pulling power yesterday.

PTU units got right behind - or should that be in front of - the fund-raising campaign by pulling an 9.5-tonne armoured personnel carrier.

The strong-arm effort was part of afternoon events at the PTU's Fanling headquarters. Each PTU company came up with a $5,000 donation and by yesterday evening, organiser Inspector Dave Jordan said they had raised between $62,000 and $64,000.

The cash continued to roll in last night with a series of raffles at PTU headquarters, a charity wine tasting and party in the officers' mess.

'Last year we raised $85,000 and if we can crack the $80,000 mark in the present economic conditions we'll be pleased,' Mr Jordan said.
