I completely agree with the sentiments of John Wong's letter 'Parents are not ignorant or prejudiced' (South China Morning Post, December 8).
There has been no proven record to show that learning in mother tongue 'Guangdong dialect' will improve standards of both Chinese and English.
Many parents just do not believe that this will work.
From the viewpoint of the Education Department, learning all the subjects (except English) in a mother tongue will spare more time for learning English.
But using a mother tongue in studying will reduce the exposure to English. Thus there is still a great controversy yet to be overcome.
Therefore the present approach of allowing a portion of schools to use either Chinese or English as a teaching medium is correct.
