A law was passed yesterday to make mainland blood supplies safer. Xinhua said the law was signed by President Jiang Zemin and would go into effect on October 1. People aged 18 to 55 would be encouraged to donate blood voluntarily. A version of the law that was expected to be passed last year would have banned blood sales and punished blood dealers, mainland newspapers said.
