Poll shows public gloom

Satisfaction with the political, economic and social climate has slumped, a survey has found. The 1997 Review of People's Areas of Concern, by Hong Kong University, revealed people happy with political conditions dropped from 45.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent while satisfaction with economic conditions dropped from 56.2 per cent to 39.5 per cent.

Approvals for social conditions fell from 59.1 per cent to 39.8 per cent.
