Jardines blames shell

Faulty ammunition was blamed for the delay in firing the Noonday Gun at midnight on New Year's Eve. A Jardines spokesman said there was nothing wrong with the Hotchkiss Mark 1 rapid-firing naval gun but the first shell was a dud. 'It's not anybody's fault. In any quantity of ammunition, there are always a few that are defective.'
