Malaysian Peter Velappan may become the first Asian to rank among the top officials at world soccer's ruling body FIFA, a Singaporean newspaper reported yesterday.

The long-time general secretary of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which runs the game in Asia, was offered the job of FIFA general secretary by two front-runners vying for the presidency, The Sunday Times newspaper quoted him as saying.

'I have been offered the post of FIFA general secretary by Lennart Johansson, as well as by current FIFA general secretary Sepp Blatter, if either of them is elected to the FIFA presidency,' Velappan said.
