Colourful musical on its way

One of the best-loved musicals by British composers Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will begin playing in Hong Kong in April.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is a colourful version of the biblical story.

The production to visit the SAR - being staged by The Really Useful Group (Australia) - will require a Boeing 747 full of equipment, including lights and costumes. The cast of more than 80 will include a chorus of 40 Hong Kong children.

Every night, more than 150 people will be required on and off stage to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Group managing director Tim McFarlane said: 'After the success of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, we're thrilled to be bringing another superb show to Hong Kong.' The musical falls under the Tourist Association's Spotlight on Hong Kong umbrella.

The scheme is aimed at making the SAR 'the events capital of Asia'.

A Tourist Association spokesperson said: 'As well as enriching Hong Kong's appeal for new visitors, such events help encourage people to keep coming back. Equally, they bring immense new pleasure and enjoyment to local audiences.' The musical opens at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, on April 30.

It tells the story of Joseph, a good son who works on his father's farm.

His brothers resent the way in which their father, Jacob, dotes on Joseph. They become even more jealous when Jacob gives him a dazzling coat of many colours.

They steal it and sell him into slavery, telling their father he is dead.

The musical was first performed in 1968 and 44 million people worldwide are estimated to have seen it.
