Hutchison rewarded for patient approach

It is amazing what a difference a couple of photo-finish results can mean to the overall success of a stable.

And long-serving trainer Bruce Hutchison would be the first to agree, as several tight finishes went against him in the early part of the season.

However, a couple of wins in the past fortnight may have turned the tide and the general appearance of several members of his team suggests more are in store.

Word From Rome and Cash Fortune are consistent types, who have both raced without a lot of luck in recent starts.

But racing has brought them to a peak and the way they finished off their work yesterday morning indicated both should race well when next produced.

There was not a lot between the pair as they dashed the last quarter of a 1,200-metre gallop in 23.9 seconds and they should be kept on side.

Hutchison's Outstanding Lad has only had the three runs and was sent out a short-priced favourite last time out when finishing well down the track behind Markgraf.

On face value the run was disappointing but it may have come too soon on the back of an excellent second to City Warrior.

And anyone who backed the youngster would be well advised to give him at least one more chance. He wasn't out to make time as he ambled over 1,200 metres but he does look in great shape and a couple of his gallops in the past week have been very impressive.

Senator has been kept ticking over since his easy win at Happy Valley and he couldn't be any fitter.

He does hold his form and if Hutchison can find a suitable race, it is well within his scope to win again. Once more yesterday, Senator was not out to make time but he oozed strength as he completed a leisurely 1,200 metres.

Ivan Allan's promising young stayers Quick Speed and City Warrior had each other for company as they put 800 metres behind them in 49.9 seconds and they look capable of rising higher in the classifications.

Looking towards Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting, Swifty-Swifty looked fitter as he completed 800 metres with Sumotori and Multi-Pro and the gelding should go well if he gains a run in the Kwun Tong Handicap over 1,650 metres.

Others to work well on a busy morning were Rusty Babe, Dragon's Pal, Mazal, Easy Way and Inventor.
