Ukraine's six shipyards sold seven ships last year worth US$81.4 million compared with 11 ships worth $168.5 million in 1996, according to Industrial Policy Minister Vasyl Hureyev.

The government hoped output of ships and orders, which stand at $600 million, would increase this year, Mr Hureyev said.

He said that parliament passed a law in December on state support of the shipbuilding industry and his ministry would use government guarantees to attract more credits to the sector.
