A month ago - (South China Morning Post, January 2) - I wrote expressing concern that while Britain and other civilised countries were introducing laws to stop stationary cars leaving their engines running and poisoning the atmosphere, Hong Kong seems to have no interest in introducing this eminently sensible measure.

Bearing in mind our legislators' penchant for using their chauffeur-driven cars for the arduous journey from the Provisional Legislative Council Chamber to their favourite restaurants in Central - a distance of about 200 metres - could it be there is a degree of self-interest involved in their refusing to handle this particular hot potato? A word from Legco reassuring us that this is not the case, and setting a limit on the time needed to enact such a law would be encouraging.
