The condition of recently elected Guangdong Vice-Governor Xu Deli and his wife following a serious road accident at the start of the Lunar New Year holiday remains unclear.

A doctor at the Shantou Central Hospital yesterday confirmed that Mr Xu and his wife - Guangzhou Vice-Mayor Wang Shouchu - had improved since they were brought in.

But she said neither was stable enough to receive any visitors.

'At the moment, his wife's condition is relatively more serious,' the doctor said.

She refused to say if either of them had regained consciousness.

A date for their release from hospital has not been set.

Guangdong government officials in Guangzhou were unavailable for comment yesterday.

The accident happened on Thursday as the couple drove to Shantou with 10 relatives in a 15-seater van on the Guangzhou-Shantou expressway.

Early reports said the vehicle flipped over after a front tyre exploded.

Some reports claimed the van was speeding.

The Guangdong Public Security office did not confirm any reports, and said officials would comment only after the Lunar New Year break.

Mr Xu was chosen two weeks ago to join Governor Lu Ruihua's list of provincial vice-governors.

He was one of only three new faces added to the lineup.

Mr Xu was formerly the Communist Party municipal secretary for Shantou city.
