Flyover closed as families make offerings for bus tragedy victims

Felix Chan

Part of the Tonnochy Road flyover was closed yesterday while relatives of the three people killed in Friday's bus accident made offerings in their memory.

The two families laid fruit, joss sticks and roast meat on the pavement outside the Cine-Art House cinema at the Sun Hung Kai Centre, near to where the upturned bus landed.

Chan Tit-keung and his wife of eight months Thitiphansorasak Somporn, both 42, together with fellow passenger Lam Yuet-kin, 38, were killed after the route 118 Citybus flipped over on the flyover.

During the 45-minute ceremony, Lam's two teenage daughters were comforted by relatives as their father Kong Cho-wing, 47, battled to light joss sticks against the breeze.

Four bouquets of white flowers were placed against the concrete wall of a flower bed beneath the flyover.

A representative of Somporn's family in Thailand would come to Hong Kong soon, a spokesman for the Thai Consulate-General said.

The Social Welfare Department has awarded a total of $269,177 to survivors of the accident and families of the dead.

The families were granted a total of $208,575, while the injured victims were each awarded amounts ranging between $2,152 and $7,955.

The awards were made to 18 survivors and the families of the three dead. The department is still processing 23 more claims.
