South China Morning Post photographers have won another armful of awards, this time from the Hong Kong Press Photographers' Association.

 The paper snapped up six prizes, including best spot news and best sports picture in two of the hotly contested categories for the Focus at the Frontline competition.

 The shot by Ricky Chung Wai-kwong of protesters outside the Convention and Exhibition Centre on handover night came first in the spot news category.

 Another picture from handover night - K. Y. Cheng's shot of Governor Chris Patten and his weeping daughters aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia - won first runner-up in the people section.

 Best sports picture went to David Wong Chi-kin who framed a water-skier flipped upside down while being pulled along by dragon boaters' paddle power.

 The paper also collected runners-up awards in the spot news, sports and features categories, selected from 457 entries.

 Editor Jonathan Fenby said: 'The Post has always laid great importance on excellence in photographs and I'm glad to see that the efforts of our photographers have been recognised in this way.'  Picture editor Sam Chan Kwok-leung said: 'It's great to win competitions and prizes help staff, young and old, to keep producing their best.'  The photo of the year was a candid shot by Fu Chun-wai for the New Evening Post of a Black Watch soldier caught with the wind up his kilt which gained international attention when reprinted in the Post.

 Earlier this week the paper's Internet edition (www.scmp.com) was voted best online newspaper service outside the United States at the third Editor and Publisher awards in Seattle.



Post photographers snap up armful of press awards
