Sweet revenge sours
Chinese playwright Cao Yu's The Wilderness is a classic tale of hatred, sorrow, anguish, and revenge.
Drama students from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts are bringing this 'masterpiece' to life in Cantonese at its Studio Theatre.
Chaio Yen-wang kills Chou Hu's entire family, cripples Chou and throws him into jail.
He then steals Chou's wife- to-be for his own son.
Chou is in despair but swears revenge. After planning for eight years, he escapes from prison and heads straight to Chaio's house.
But his fury turns to tumult and confusion when he finds that Chaio has died two years before.
The Wilderness is directed by academy lecturers Lee Ming-sum and Desmond Tang. Set and costume designer is Sam Leung, lighting designer is Mak Kwok-fai and sound designer, Ruby Ko.
The cast includes Lo Chi-sun, Chiu Woon, Leung Tsui- shan, Ng Wah-sun, Tam Hung- man and Wong Wing-hong.
Each year directors and designers are given the chance to showcase their work as part of the Academy Studio Theatre Series.
The plays are joint works by students and staff of the academy.
The five productions in this year's series are: The Doctor In Spite of Himself, Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love, The Wilderness, Falsettoland and The Father.
The Wilderness will be performed at the Studio Theatre from March 2 to March 7, with shows starting at 7.30 pm.
There will also be a matinee on March 7 at 2.45 pm.
Tickets, costing $85, $70 (Society of Academy Members), and $40 (full-time students, senior citizens and the disabled), are on sale from Urbtix.
