Wharf Cable has decided to replace its International channel with Jet TV.

The International Channel was scrapped on February 9, which means there are no longer any news programmes from France, Germany, Australia and other countries on Channel 15. Jet TV is from Japan. News programmes from Shenzhen, Zhejiang and Taiwan will be aired on News Channel One instead.

As a longtime subscriber to the Wharf Cable service, I find this arrangement extremely unreasonable and short-sighted, because this company has deprived its customers of the chance to watch news programmes from different countries and in different languages. In fact, it is exactly because Cable TV offered exclusive foreign news from France, Germany and Belgium etc, that I got connected to cable in the first place.

I understand Wharf Cable has done this to cut costs; hence, its decision to lay off 15 English-speaking editorial staff. But surely, given the $250 subscribers are paying each month, they are entitled to have a good balance of foreign news and entertainment programmes, aren't they? CHAN SHUK YING, SUSANNA Wan Chai
