Low cloud forces flights to be diverted

Low cloud over Kai Tak forced nine planes to be diverted yesterday.

Civil aviation officials said cloud hung down to 91 metres for two hours. If pilots cannot see the runway at 213 metres on approach, they must abort landings.

The planes were diverted to Kaohsiung, Taipei, Shenzhen, Macau, Guangzhou and Shantou. All returned to Hong Kong after refuelling, when visibility improved.

'The decision on whether to hold for a while and try another approach depends on the fuel status,' a Civil Aviation Department spokesman said. 'If the fuel status is critical they have to divert. It's the pilot's decision.'
