Welcoming Olympics blackout

I refer to the letter from Stuart Winchester headlined, 'Stations' excuses cut no ice', in which he criticised Hong Kong's television stations for not broadcasting the Winter Olympics.

Mr Winchester felt that the stations should have shown the Olympics, but I disagree.

I do not think the Winter Olympics would have been that popular with TV audiences in Hong Kong. Remember the last summer Olympics, when every station broadcast the Games? Even if you were not interested in what was happening, there was no escape.

If there had been extensive coverage of the winter Games, then broadcasting would have continued late into the night. This would have caused problems for people staying up late, who had to work the next day, especially school students. I remember during the summer Olympics, some of my classmates were exhausted from having stayed up to watch events.

I think it is a good thing that we have not had coverage of the Nagano Games.
