Deputies stepping up drive for office in SAR
Local deputies have increased pressure for an office in Hong Kong.
At least two deputies spoke in a group meeting of the need for an office to provide supporting services for the Hong Kong team.
It is understood they argued it would not contravene the Basic Law if the office was funded by the SAR Government.
'Local deputies are taking part in national affairs in the name of the SAR. We cannot be separated from the SAR,' said one deputy.
The NPC Standing Committee has yet to decide whether a local office is needed, but committee member Tsang Hin-chi has spoken against the idea, saying it might invite criticism of mainland intervention.
Hong Kong team vice-convenor Maria Tam Wai-chu said an office, either funded by the central Government or the SAR, could be set up.
She said there was as yet no consensus and more discussion was needed, although she ruled out deputies establishing their own offices.
'We are working as a delegation. The office should serve all of us if there is one,' she said.
Convenor Ng Hong-mun said he was against an office.
