Dependency

I refer to the letter from Gerald Heng (South China Morning Post, March 13), which expressed opposition to Puerto Rico becoming the 51st US state.

Your correspondent seems to be unaware that Puerto Rico is already a US dependency (commonwealth). It would be impossible for it to 'stay independent'.

He suggests it join 'one of the Spanish states like Brazil'. Brazilians speak Portuguese.

He refers to potential 'immigration problems'.

As US citizens, Puerto Ricans are now free to visit and reside in the US whenever they choose.
