Hi-tech vote system planned

A new electronic voting system is being designed for the legislative chamber due to Basic Law requirements.

The Basic Law says private member's bills, motions or amendments to a government bill need a simple majority of two groups of legislators - functional constituency members, and geographical constituency and Election Committee legislators.

In the former legislative council, bills were passed by overall majority.

A secretariat spokesman said software programming had started and installation of the $1 million project could start as early as April 9, after the provisional legislature's last meeting.
