A school is being sued for $2 million after a van passing the schoolyard ran over a student's foot, a court heard yesterday.

In December 1990, Ng Wun-yeung, then eight, stepped on to the road in front of the Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society school in Kowloon City. A van driven by Leung Lai-ping ran over the young boy's foot, the Court of First Instance heard.

The school is being sued for allegedly failing to have any staff outside its gates, not providing crossing patrols and not having a crossing-barrier. The boy's family is seeking $2 million.

The boy, now in Form Two, says he still has bad dreams about the incident, is scarred physically and has lost some feeling in his foot, making sports harder.

The hearing continues today before Mr Justice Conrad Seagroatt.
