Proposal for backup land under study
THE Government is studying an approach to provide backup land under longer tenure for the handling of containerised cargo.
The Secretary for Economic Services, Mrs Anson Chan Fang On-sang, told legislators the annual growth in the volume of containerised cargo handled by mid-stream operations would be about 13 to 16 per cent in the next five years.
The cargo was mainly handled by facilities located on land held under short-term tenancies, she said.
There was also insufficient backup land with waterfront for such operations, Mrs Chan said in a written reply to legislator Dr Huang Chen-ya's question.
''There should be a more systematic approach with land being provided under longer tenure,'' she said.
To this end, the Government was carrying out an in-house study on ways to achieve this. The results should be available by October, she said.
