Dangerous one-handed drivers

I could not agree more with Warren and Margaret Edgar's letter headlined, 'Airlines need tough policy on mobile phones' (South China Morning Post, March 24), though philosophically I would not put the tendency of someone to disregard the warning of not using cellphones or pagers during take off and landing down to 'human nature being what it is'.

In addition to the Edgars' plea, I also think the SAR Government should make it an offence for motorists to use cellphones while driving.

How many times have we seen motorists talking on their cellphone with one hand, while, for instance, negotiating a corner in heavy traffic with the other, in total disregard to either the safety of other road users or the smooth flow of traffic? I am not sure how many traffic accidents have arisen as a result of this, which is hard to ascertain, but do we need any such statistics to be aware of the danger posed? RAYMOND W.K. LAU Kowloon
