A new shipping alliance - the United Alliance - was born on March 26, grouping Hanjin Shipping, DSR-Senator Line, Cho Yang Shipping and United Arab Shipping Co.

The carriers, which co-ordinate 93 container vessels with a total capacity of 302,000 teu (20 ft equivalent units), would provide competitive global market coverage, sailing frequencies and transit times in all key trades, an alliance spokesman said.

There will be seven weekly sailings offered on the trans-Pacific routes, four in the Europe/Asia trade and two weekly services in the trans-Atlantic and Mediterranean trades.

Other existing large alliances include the New World Alliance grouping APL, Mitsui OSK Lines and Hyundai Merchant Marine which deploys 100 container vessels worldwide in all major east-west container trades, and the Grand Alliance grouping Hapag-Lloyd, Malaysia International Shipping Corp, NYK Line, Orient Overseas Container Line and P&O Nedlloyd.
