China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co has found defects in each of the engines in seven vessels it received recently from South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries Co, according to Maritime Asia Today.

Cosco accepted the last of seven 3,400-teu (20 ft equivalent units) vessels built by Samsung at the end of last year. The company claimed to have saved US$1.1 million on each of the engines by sourcing the parts itself. The Samsung-MAN B & W 6L80MC engines were built with the technical support of Hitatchi Zosen.

A Cosco spokesman said poor-quality workmanship had affected the reliability of the engines and forced the engine designers, MAN B & W, to make repairs.
