Patten speech backs Hague

Former Governor Chris Patten was due to re-enter the British political scene last night with a speech at his local Conservative Party branch.

Mr Patten, chairman of the party until he lost his seat in Parliament and was given the Hong Kong job, cleared the text of his speech with Conservative headquarters in Westminster.

An advance copy of the speech suggested he would give strong support to party leader William Hague.

The party agent for the constituency in Richmond Park, London, said she had invited Mr Patten to speak at a fund-raising dinner for the local association.
