I am overjoyed to learn that TVB Pearl will this evening start to air 30 episodes of the series Journey to the West, as I have had a life-long interest in all aspects of Chinese culture.

I congratulate the station on taking this initiative.

This will be a very good introduction to Chinese culture for uninitiated Westerners, some of whom, I hope, will acquire a lasting interest in China. It would be nice if Journey to the West was followed by the three essential Chinese classics, namely Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dream of the Red Chamber.

I also believe that films, such as Red Sorghum and Raise the Red Lantern etc, offer a fascinating view of Chinese society during the early decades of this century, and should be part of viewers' initiation to Chinese culture.
