Veteran politician Elsie Tu said she had mixed feelings on leaving the legislature after 47 years of public service.

At the final sitting yesterday, Mrs Tu, who has decided not to run for re-election in the upcoming election, said she was sorry to give up public life.

'In other ways, I feel I can spend my time profitably without being a member of the council,' she said.

'I can still do something useful in the community and also take things a little more easily because life in the past year has really been very heavy and very hard.' Mrs Tu pledged to continue to serve the public outside the council.

'I'm not an opportunist, and would not change my nationality just to gain a seat.' She dismissed suggestions her decision not to participate in the May polls made the Kowloon East geographical polls less colourful.
