People should make real the dreams of heroic sons

MARCH 26 is our glorious Independence and National Day.

We achieved our independence at the cost of supreme sacrifices of millions of martyrs.

I pay a glowing tribute to these valiant martyrs of the glorious War of Independence and pray for the salvation of their souls.

The main spirit of our struggle for independence was to establish a free, democratic and prosperous Bangladesh.

We are now striving to give democracy an institutional shape for establishing a transparent parliamentary democracy suited to our development needs in accordance with the hopes and aspirations of the people.

The present democratic government is resolved to maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the country and to implementing development programmes as quickly as possible.

We have set priorities to alleviate poverty.

We are concentrating on the agriculture industry.

New industrial policies have been formulated and investment opportunities have been offered to boost the market economy and promote rapid industrialisation.

Foreign investment is being encouraged for the growth of capital and technology.

Special emphasis has been placed on a literacy campaign.

Compulsory primary education and a mass education programme have spread throughout the entire country.

We are making sincere efforts for the development and welfare of women.

This is being done by facilitating their participation in various national activities.

In the context of changing the international political scenario, Bangladesh is playing an active and constructive role in a regional and global perspective.

As the initiator of SAARC (the Southeast Asian Association of Regional Co-operation), Bangladesh is playing a vital role in making a meaningful contribution to fight poverty and establish peace and stability in the region.

The principle of our foreign policy is to promote global peace and harmony through understanding and friendship to all nations and by participating in various international forums, including the United Nations, OIC, NAM and the Commonwealth.

Bangladeshis living abroad are our ambassadors of goodwill and friendship.

I hope they will contribute to national development efforts and play a role in rejuvenating the economy of the country while projecting the country in its true perspective to the world at large.

On the occasion of our Independence and National Day, let us all take a solemn pledge to dedicate ourselves to making real the dreams of the heroic sons of the soil who laid down their lives for an independent, democratic and prosperous Bangladesh.

This will be our homage to them.

I extend my heartiest felicitations to all my countrymen on this auspicious occasion and wish them continued peace, happiness and prosperity.
