I EXTEND my heartiest greetings to my countrymen on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of our Independence and National Day.

On this joyful occasion, we are fully conscious of the deep sense of obligation we owe to the memory of those living and dead, whose vision, dedication and sacrifice have made the observance of this day possible.

Their contribution has made our solemn pledge to build a truly democratic, free, stable and prosperous Bangladesh more meaningful. Their dream has shaped a new spirit of resolve and determination in the last few years.

These years have been a momentous turning point in our nation's struggle to consolidate its hard-won independence and to take its rightful place in the world community as a self-respecting and contributing member state. We have seen the triumph of a people's will and aspirations for a truly democratic society freed from injustice, oppression and corrupt autocracy.

The tasks ahead of us are immense as we strive to secure our objectives of an environment of peace, freedom and security. As we gear ourselves to meet the challenges of the future and to improve the living standards of our people, we need the combined resolve, dedication and co-operation of all our countrymen.

In the international sphere, Bangladesh will continue to contribute its utmost through active and meaningful participation in the achievement of a more stable, peaceful, just and co-operative society in our region of South Asia. Support for the central role of the United Nations and the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, the OIC, NAM and Commonwealth remains a prerogative of our foreign policy.

I hope that Bangladeshis living abroad will exercise their responsibility to build the image of our country in the societies they live in so as to generously contribute to the development and progress of our nation. It is their initiative and endeavour that can inject vital impetus to our efforts.

On this day, let us renew our resolve to dedicate ourselves to rebuilding our nation in the new spirit of freedom and democracy that we have so painstakingly achieved. Inshallah, with hard work, our success will be realised.

I wish all of you success, prosperity and happiness.
