Trail fine
I refer to your reader Wing C. Cheng's letter headlined, 'Filthy' (Sunday Morning Post, March 29), expressing concern over filthy and noisy conditions of the 'three-kilometre walking trail' at the Peak on Sundays and holidays.
The trail at the Peak is a famous resort frequented by both local residents and tourists, particularly on Sundays and public holidays.
The Urban Services Department provides a routine daily cleaning service to the trail and deploys a 'waste paper pick-up team' to conduct clearance along the trail in the early morning on Mondays and the day after holidays. Recent inspections to the trail indicated that the hygienic condition was satisfactory.
In addition, there are three dog latrines along the trail for the convenience of visitors who walk on the trail with their dogs.
These dog latrines are located inside the Harlech Road Sitting-out Area, on a slope at the rear of Harlech Road Fitness Trail and outside 26 Lugard Road.
To keep the area clean, we are going to put up more signs along the trail to warn against littering and spitting.
As regards dog owners not putting their dogs on leashes and the noisy condition on Sundays and holidays, they fall outside the jurisdiction of this department and I believe the Agriculture and Fisheries Department and the police will follow up in these aspects.
We shall continue to keep the trail at the Peak under close observation and take appropriate action whenever necessary.
