China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co has started a rail service linking Shanghai to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.

The service was introduced to aid the movement of freight shipments from Japan.

The freight, shipped from Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe and Moji ports, will connect the day after arrival in Shanghai with trains that run on fixed arrival and departure schedules.

The service will enjoy simplified customs clearance.

Transit time between Shanghai and Chengdu, about 600 kilometres west, is expected to be about 85 hours.
