Eight hurt in Chungking Mansions blaze

EIGHT people were injured and 39 evacuated in a fire at Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui early yesterday.

About 100 firefighters and 23 fire engines took less than an hour to put out the blaze, which broke out in a 14th-floor corridor. Eight residents were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Four remained in hospital in stable and satisfactory conditions last night.

Turntable ladders were used to rescue four people from windows.

Fire Services spokesman Chris Yip Tin-sum said the fire was thought to have been started by discarded cigarette butts. He was uncertain about when fire officers last checked Chungking Mansions.

Michael Horsburgh, general manager of the neighbouring Holiday Inn, said he had long been concerned about fire safety at Chungking Mansions. 'If there were a serious fire in there, the smoke would affect us,' he said.
