Jonah not having whale of a time back in Blighty

FURTHER testimony of the hard times afflicting Britain comes with a letter from Royal Marine Lance Corporal Mark ''Jonah'' Jones published in the latest Valley Rugby Club newsletter.

Corporal Jones has been posted back to Plymouth after a three-year stint here with his wife, Sue. Neither, it seems, has settled. ''We miss Hongkong very much and seem to miss it more and more each day,'' he wrote plaintively in a letter to his former team mates.

He also asked them to keep an eye open for job opportunities in the territory as he has asked to leave the service in 12 months time because ''I just have to get out of this country''.

The burly corporal's supposedly happy Hongkong memories include commanding an inflatable craft while it was rammed repeatedly by a smuggler's dai fei in Deep Bay while on a night-time operation in which three of his ship mates were injured.

Times must be hard back in Blighty.
