Crowd of two drawn to forum

APATHY won the day in New Territories East yesterday when a forum was cancelled because only two people turned up - and one of them was me.

This was despite the fact that the 600,000-voter constituency has attracted some of the biggest names in politics - including Emily Lau Wai-hing, Allen Lee Peng-fei and Andrew Wong Wang-fat.

When I arrived at the forum in Wo Che Estate, Sha Tin, the candidates were posing for a photograph for the only other person there - another reporter. At 2.35 pm, five minutes after the forum was due to start, the candidates began to shake hands with each other and leave.

Outside the forum, there were only a few posters, doing little to attract the attention of passing residents.

Their schedule disrupted, the candidates seemed to be at a loss to know how to fill in the time. Ms Lau dropped in at a fast-food shop, while Mr Lee headed for a shopping arcade with his campaign aide.
