Divers to examine wreck as jetfoil victim dies
Divers will examine a wreck today to determine whether it caused Saturday's jetfoil crash which injured 120 people.
The news came as Wan Yuen-lan died of head injuries sustained in the accident three kilometres west of Tai O.
The 77-year-old's death almost certainly means a coroner will investigate the crash as well as the Marine Department.
The wreck, in mainland waters, is of a 90-metre ship initially marked with a buoy by mainland authorities when it sank six years ago. The buoy is no longer there but the wreck is marked on Hong Kong marine charts.
Hong Kong officials were last night unable to give more details of the ship, which is in about 6.2 metres of water and breaks the surface at low tide.
Although the wreck is 1.5 nautical miles from where the accident is believed to have occurred, the department's acting principal marine officer, Raymond Chung Siu-man, said it was possible the reported crash site was incorrect because the jetfoil would have drifted afterwards.
Although the department refuses to speculate on causes just a few days into a six-week study, Mr Chung appeared to rule out a collision with a submarine.
